SUBTRACTION – COUNTING ON TO TAKE AWAY?

This morning you will be learning another strategy to do subtraction.  We will be counting on to take away by finding the DIFFERENCE between the two numbers using the empty number line.

  • It is so much easier to count on rather than count back. You can have a go on your own later or at home to use the strategy online with this SUBTRACTION ON A NUMBER LINE activity.  You can change how big the numbers are that you have to subtract and you can actually see the jumps. [Remember to click on the padlock to allow Flash player…if you need to…then click on Reload.]

You can also watch a couple of videos I made of this lesson, using an Empty Numberline to count on and count back to subtract.  You can find it on Dolphinkids by following these instructions:

This makes subtraction SO EASY!  🙂

Let me know how you go.

Flipped Learning in Rotating Groups Today

Today in Rotating Maths Groups the computer group will be flipping their learning.  Today you will watch the lesson on subtraction on video and practise the strategy on whiteboards, before working with the teacher to show what you have learnt when you reach that session.

  1. Click here to watch the video. MATHS VIDEOS
  2. Use your whiteboard to work out some of the strategies using an Empty Numberline.

You can rewind as many times as you like until you understand the strategy and can do it yourself.

Enjoy flipping your learning.  You’ll find it’s easier and even more fun than backflips!  😎

Subtraction on a Numberline

Today when your group is on the Computer, you will be practising our strategy of subtracting by counting on!  🙂

Subtraction on a Numberline – choose your level, try to work out the jumps, then check by clicking SHOW JUMPS, SHOW JUMP SIZE, SHOW SUM.    Practise a few then write down one on your sheet to show what you have learned.

You can then go onto Study Ladder and log in for your new tasks or do Convict Count-On in the post below this one.

Enjoy your Maths today!    😆
