We are thinking of those of you who are isolating and can’t be here this week. 🙁 We hope to see you on Thursday. For everybody else, don’t forget to bring your swimmers, goggles, towel, dry undies and thongs for your feet as we are going to be changing back at school this year. We leave during lunch at 1:20.
We’ve practised writing them and they were so original and creative! Last time we used the first strategy from the video – STARTING WITH THE MOMENT OF ACTION!!
Today we are going to write a SIZZLING START using DIALOGUE to start and grip the reader from the very first words! Remember – 10 seconds to engage your reader.
This is your writing prompt to use:
The school excursion – and annoying Max was the one to find the enormous gold nugget.
Start with speech marks as you say something. Remember to use them like this:
“It’s not fair!” yelled Rosie.
AND you need to start on a new line EACH TIME you have a new speaker!
Looking forward to what you have to say in your writing books! 😎
In Maths today we are going to be investigating what makes an ODD number and what makes an EVEN number. Then we are going to investigate what rules we can make, about what happens when we add:
Last week we talked about construction materials and how strong they might be….when we read Paper Skyscrapers, and then we created our own Puzzle Pages. Today we are going to become aware of the construction materials used to build our very own school buildings, taking photos or making drawings of parts of the school, in the last few pages of our booklet. Here are some instructions to finding the link to Inquisitive. When you get to our class work, type in the 4-digit code we use and it will take you to our work with all the links to videos and images.
WOW! Just look at how things have grown in two weeks! It must be the good watering they are getting. Thank you for going down to water them every day. They love it!
I love how enthusiastic you were when we went out to draw our faction icons into our booklet! Remember, the doors to the Undercover Area weren’t there on the 2012 map (10 years ago!) I’m really glad they are there now, and that they have been decorated too.
This week we started using our draft writing books to write SIZZLING STARTS for narratives (stories). Remember, you only have 10 seconds to persuade your reader that they really want to read your story. Using a sizzling start you can engage your reader from your first line of your story!
We looked at the video below to learn different strategies to use to create a SIZZLING START. Watch it again and again to check out other ways you can start your stories – but remember….Start with THE MOMENT OF ACTION and BAN THE ORDINARY! Look carefully at the examples of good writing in this video.
VIDEO EXPLAINING AND GIVING EXAMPLES FOR YOU TO CREATE SIZZLING STARTS.
Then you had a go at brainstorming in groups of 3 on our whiteboards, shared your work in a class circle, then had a go writing Your own sizzling start ON YOUR OWN while I timed you [10 minutes!] The title of our story was: GHOSTS REALLY DO EXIST!
I was super impressed with your creative ideas when you shared your writing. Remember, when it’s a sizzling start you need to make sure that you do not start telling the story. That comes next. 😎
Here are a couple of your brainstorms and you can see how hard at work you guys were.
WOW! What a great start to your story writing skills! 🙂
I just want to congratulate all of you who had a go at telling news last week! You did a great job and we enjoyed listening to you. How brave some people were and from now on it will be so much easier.
We are looking forward to hearing from new people this week so don’t forget your news Monday news people! Remember – the important thing is to PREPARE and PRACTISE! That’s all that it takes!
Teamwork, people!! I saw teamwork wherever I looked – people taking turns and sharing ideas and encouraging each other when things went wrong. (And things did go wrong like tables being bumped and all the dominoes falling over too soon….!)
Your domino runs rocked! Enjoy watching them and sharing them with your parents here. 🙂
It looked like you all learned more about how to position the dominoes to cause different pathways. Great job today! 😎
In our Makerspace/STEM session today we will be using dominoes to create domino runs. We will talk about how to set them up and what things can cause changes. It should be good fun! 🙂
Here are some videos of domino runs. This is all about CAUSE AND EFFECT. If you do one thing (knock down the first domino), then you cause a reaction to happen (the next domino will fall) and it goes on and on to the end.
This afternoon you will be learning how to set up domino runs. The challenge is to set up a full run and have it work where all of your dominoes will fall.
This video clip shows you how to make a template for setting up dominoes, using lego.
Later on we’ll learn about spirals and walls. Let’s perfect the lines of dominoes first.
