Adding two or three digit numbers – with regrouping

This animation (which you can find on “Maths Tools – Adding 3-digit numbers”) might help you to understand how regrouping works.

ADDING 3-digit numbers with regrouping

This works for 2-digit numbers, 4-digit numbers and so on…

Practise using this and challenging yourself using paper too, to see if you can do as well as the computer and get them correct.

😎

Now you can also have a go at subtracting with regrouping.  Use this animation to see how it works.

SUBTRACTING 2-digit numbers with regrouping

This should feel much simpler for you now.

🙂

SUBTRACTION – COUNTING ON TO TAKE AWAY?

This morning you will be learning another strategy to do subtraction.  We will be counting on to take away by finding the DIFFERENCE between the two numbers using the empty number line.

  • It is so much easier to count on rather than count back. You can have a go on your own later or at home to use the strategy online with this SUBTRACTION ON A NUMBER LINE activity.  You can change how big the numbers are that you have to subtract and you can actually see the jumps. [Remember to click on the padlock to allow Flash player…if you need to…then click on Reload.]

You can also watch a couple of videos I made of this lesson, using an Empty Numberline to count on and count back to subtract.  You can find it on Dolphinkids by following these instructions:

This makes subtraction SO EASY!  🙂

Let me know how you go.

Expanded Notation – Understanding Place Value

We worked hard in Maths this week, checking our understanding of place value using MAB blocks and swopping them to compare their values.

Look at these pictures of MAB blocks and the video where Harper explains how to compare them on the worksheet.

So, if the number is 2 543.  There are 2 x 100s, 5 x 100s, 4 x 10s and 3 x 1s.

If we run out of 1 000s, then we have to swop ten hundreds for each 1000.  So we would have 2000 which means 10 x 100s + 10 x 100s = 20 x 100s plus the 5 x 100s we already have, so it would be: 25 x 100s, 4 x 10s and 3 x 1s.

If we run out of 1 000s and 100s, then we have to swop 10s for the 2 000 and the 500.  We would have: 254 x 10s and 3 x 1s

If we are only counting in 1s then we would have 2 543 ones.

Harper explains how to swop between them to make the exact same number in this video.

Now have a go at the worksheet which you will find in your Connect Classroom soon.  See if you can do it in the Word document and send it back to me using the SHARE button in your Office 365.  Otherwise, I have included a PDF here too.  Print it out, then you can scan it and send it to me through e-mail or by using the SHARE button in your Office 365.

Money Maths with Coach Cash!

Last week we all enjoyed Coach Cash’s visit to teach us more about money and good spending habits.

Remember the motto she taught us:

Spend some on you… but save some too!

Using your key card – not a credit card!Congratulations everyone as she said that you are the first group of students she has seen who know so much about spending – being able to work out deals and how to save money!  Very impressive!

BATTLESHIPS ON A GRID

We are learning about grid references [A1, B3, E5]. We will be looking at grids and working out their co-ordinates.  First we will look at Maths Dictionary for Kids – C for co-ordinates to see which letter or number comes first.  [Challenge question: which is the X and which is the Y axis?]

Then we will be learning how to play battleships with our partners.  When you have played a game with a partner, you can have a go at playing the on-line game below.

BATTLESHIPS – a game to check your grid references.    You need to call out the grid reference before you bomb it.  🙂

What causes the seasons on Earth?

How do the seasons change across the world?

What causes them to change?

How can we explain these changes and why they are not random?

Watch this video clip to try to explain this in your own words.

We will be talking about the seasons during Maths when we do “The Trip Around the Sun”, working out facts using calendars and the seasons. Have a go at watching this tonight at home and we can talk about it tomorrow at school.
[This is called ‘flipped learning’ where you guys get to do the watching in your own time and then we do the talking and interesting learning about it in class time.]

ROTATING MATHS GROUPS – Game #2 TIMES TABLES

Please note that you may need to enable Flash Player for some of these games.  Find a logon that works or skip those games it it won’t work for you, and go on to the next post or game.

Today in Rotating Maths Groups we will continue learning about multiplication.  This is number 2. of times tables activities. Computer will be practising their multiplication skills doing these activities:

1.   FLYING HIGH

2.  CONE CRAZY

3.  GRAND PRIX (a bit of a challenge for your times tables)

Work hard and have fun learning how to multiply!

Adding Two-digit Numbers

In Rotating Maths Groups today, with Teacher you will be working on NA10 – written strategies for addition.

When you need to add two digit numbers, sometimes you have to regroup to bridge ten.   This activity shows you how, using MABs.

ADDITION DEMONSTRATION

Now you should be able to use this  (and remember our Cheat Sheet) or Tens Frames to solve any addition problems.   😆
