TALKING TO SAMUEL’S DAD IN NEWMAN

Samuel’s Dad works in Newman and when he was down last week, he came and did the reading in the morning.  We wrote to him and asked him some questions and he has replied.  I thought I would copy his reply and put our questions up on this post so that it would be easier to read.

This is what we asked him.  Lovely to hear from you from so far away. That was such a great comment. We hope you have a safe drive home. Are the trucks like monster trucks? What’s Newman like? What do you mine? Some of us thought it might be gold? or is it another metal? What is the temperature in Newman?

This was his reply.

Hi Room 6… I’m back on the mine, it’s the weekend and I thought I had better reply to your post now that Mrs. Veary has shown me how to do it.

The trucks are even bigger than monster trucks.. it’s hard to describe but if you put another classroom on top of your classroom – they would be about as big as that.

Newman is quite an old mining town up this way. It started as a mining camp but now is a town. The Mine at Newman used to be a big hill but now it is an even bigger hole in the ground. Newman is small, it has one Coles and two pubs and lots of red dirt.

The mine I am on is called “Area C” and here we mine Iron Ore which gets sent to Japan, China and Korea and turned into steel.

It is only about 40 degrees here today, pretty cool really. It can get up to 46 or 47 and that is in the shade… in the mine in the sun it can get well over 50 degrees… really hot. When you stand on the ground in the sun you can feel your feet start to heat up in your boots.

I have hidden some pictures for you on our website…

I hope you like them. You can see the big white 4WD next to a dozer and truck shich shows you how big things are.

I look forward to doing reading duty and seeing you again soon.
