HARMONY DAY – 21st March

Today is Harmony Day!

We will be learning about Harmony Day in Australia and why we celebrate it on 21st March.

HARMONY DAY FACTS FOR STUDENTS – this website explains what it is and how we celebrate it.

Today you will be doing a reading comprehension and writing down your answers.  (This is like Book Club, but you have to write down your answers instead of speaking them.)  🙂

Some words you may need to understand are:

HARMONY DAY – is held on 21 March in Australia to celebrate and show respect for the different cultural backgrounds of so many Australians.

CULTURE – is the ideas, customs and social behaviours of a particular group of people in a country

DIVERSITY – is the ways in which people can be different from each other.

MULTICULTURAL – people of many different nationalities and cultures.  (Australia has over people from over 120 different countries.)

Harmony Day

This week we are learning about why we celebrate Harmony Day in Australia.  This week is actually Harmony Week and Harmony Day is on the 21 March!  This little video shows how different we all are but how we all belong!  Enjoy it.

Where did my family come from?

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? – going to this website will show you a little snippet of video from the new show starting on SBS in April.  This show finds out about famous Australians and where their family came from?

This is just what you will be doing at home as you ask Mum and Dad and your Grandparents and relatives, “Where did our family come from?”  We will be sharing our findings on Friday in class and working out where each family came from on the world map.  Try to find out at least one interesting family story to share with the class.
