The Chinese use a lunar calendar and so their New Year is not on 1 January as it is in our calendar. They also have animal names for their years.
Watch this animated clip to understand who the Jade Emperor is and why they have named their years after animals.
Now you will be exploring what year you were born in and what it might mean if you were Chinese.
Here is the map you had on your booklet about Aboriginal people’s connection to the land that you worked on with Ms Keating. It shows the Aboriginal language groups in Australia in 1788. You can zoom in on this map to see where Margaret River is and where the Wadandi people lived.
ABORIGINAL MAP with GENERAL AREAS – 1996 HORTON
TINDALE MAP – this is the very first map ever made showing Aboriginal Australia and you can zoom right in easily to read it. Norman Tindale published this map around 1940.
You will be looking at these maps and comparing them to the Map of Australia you know today with States and Territories. You will be finding out and using thinking skills as you compare these maps and answer the questions on your worksheet.
